Brett Sutton

Coach of Olympic, World and Ironman winning athletes

Brett (“The Doc”) Sutton (born 1959) is an Australian triathlon coach and a former professional boxer, boxing coach, greyhound trainer, racehorse trainer, elite swimming coach and co-founder of Team TBB. He has coached numerous World and Olympic champions, including Ironman world record holder, Chrissie Wellington, current Ironman World Champion, Daniela Ryf, and Olympic champions, Nicola Spirig and Emma Snowsill. He has been described as “the coach with the most formidable résumé in triathlon” and is considered to be the best and most unorthodox coach in the sport.

Sutton grew up under pressure from a father who was a demanding swim coach. Although a poor swimmer, he started swim coaching at the age of 10 and was thrown out of school at 15 for coaching during school hours. Following his father’s advice, he left home to seek out the best swim coaches in Australia to work with and absorb their techniques before starting his own swim squad. His first squad was successful but the business struggled as he ran into problems when the parents of his swimmers thought he was too young. Sutton then switched to training his ‘favorite athletes’ – greyhounds and racehorses. Working with animals honed his craft and is credited with his instinctive ability to ‘read’ athletes. Sutton returned to swim coaching as a national level coach, while also taking up the sport of boxing in his 20s.

In addition to mentoring some of the sport’s icons, including Olympic gold and silver medalist Nicola Spirig, current Ironman World Champion and record holder Daniela Ryf, and four-time Kona winner Chrissie Wellington, Brett Sutton has coached three individual Olympic medal winners, 16 ITU world champions and his athletes have amassed 150 plus 70.3 and Ironman championships. He is now head coach at Trisutto.com, where his focus is on providing coaching knowledge and services to age-group athletes.
