Seb Garry becomes the European Duathlon Age Group Champion!

After showing lots of promise in 2015, Seb Garry set himself some big goals in 2016 starting with the European Duathlon Sprint Champs.

He was in the U20 category, but went off with 3 older Age Groups which presented a bigger challenge – one that he was more than ready for!

Seb followed instructions and executed the perfect race. Right before our very eyes months we saw months of hard graft and belief unfold. He led the race pretty much from start to finish and crossed the line first in his Age Group and 1st overall to become the European Duathlon Age Group Champion!

Very proud of Seb. He has a bright future.

Race Recap from Coach Susie Langley:

Kim 2nd_Subic1A debut ITU podium for Kim Kilgroe. Photo: Atleka Ako

Am really happy to report in a big weekend of PR’s and Podiums for all my racing crew this week.

Starting off in the Philippines, Kim Kilgroe raced at the Subic Bay ASTC Triathlon Asian Cup. Kim has spent the past 2 months in camp here on the Sunshine Coast training hard for this event. The result, a podium 2nd place finish and a big Personal Best. Just the beginning for Kim….

Over in Switzerland both Sandra Gisin and Nina Derron competed in a Sprint Triathlon in Wallisellen – a traditional opener for the Swiss Triathlon Season.

It was a very satisfying little hitout for both with Sandra making a massive 7 minute PR on her performance from last year, and Nina showing her speed and class taking the overall win for the womens Sprint.

Mirjam Weerd also had an impressive Podium result this weekend at the Knipscheer Timetrial in Almere. Holding over 40km/h on a 42k Time Trial course Mirjam finished the Individual Time Trial 3rd woman overall and with a big PR. She had so much fun she then proceeded to do it all again with her team mates in a Team Time Trial race also!

Race Recap from Coach Andrew Wright:

Oscar_Andrew Recap

Another excellent race from Oscar. He time trialled the Subic Bay Junior Elite ITU race from start to finish. Even with a 10 second penalty, Oscar still managed to win by 30 seconds. James Tan came in 5th. Well done boys.

Kim Kate_Subic PodiumKate Rutherford on the podium again.

Kate Rutherford made it two podiums from two races in the women’s elite at the Subic Bay ASTC Triathlon Asian Cup. While she struggled through on the run, the important thing was she got it done.

Race Recap from Coach Michelle Barnes:

Mel_Michelle recapBrilliant runner’s up effort by Melonie MacDonald!

I’m super happy with Melonie MacDonald’s results at the Charlston Half Ironman in South Carolina on the weekend! Melonie came to me after the Calgary camp as an injured burnt out athlete who lost her spark for the sport and was hoping I could help rekindle it for her. 5 months later Melonie is not only loving the sport again and is injury free but she just placed 2nd in her Age at the Half Ironman and posted her fasted 70.3 bike split. This is all coming out of a Canadian winter on the trainer & treadmill- way to go Melonie, super start to the season!

At the recently concluded 120th edition of the Boston Marathon, Felipe “Jong” Sajulga of Team Tri-Bu Caltex Delo, had a strong showing, clocking in 2h52:25 which was a PR time by a few minutes, on what was a relatively slow day for international marathon standards. He also came up short by a few minutes, of catching up to the local Philippines Milo Marathon Champion, who’s a pure runner. Not bad for a triathlete who now operates his family business. Now for a bit of downtime in the US before returning to Mindano for a build up towards Challenge Roth this summer.

Race Recap from Coach Edith Niederfriniger:

GF Alassio: Sara Platini did a good bike training finishing the Granfondo cycling 105km and 1900+ in 4:49.46

This weekend another race and another podium placing for Chiin-Hooi Tan.

This weekend, a bronze in the Parloab team time trial with her husband Jesper.  A result reflecting the work on her bike over winter, focusing on big gear strength work.

This was not our fastest time but weather conditions were not ideal. BUT. I am stronger!! I do this race every year and it is a bit undulating. I normally struggle up the climbs and Jesper has to idle whilst I struggle. Not today! I certainly feel the difference in the climbs, big gears and all, woo hoo!

Race Recap from Coach Bella Bayliss:

Marc Stettler from Switzerland had his first triathlon hit out of the season at the Wallissellen Sprint Triathlon 600m pool swim, 15km bike, 5km run.

Marc showed that his continued dedicated training is working with  36th out of 134 in his age group. Marc got stronger as the race went on with a storming run. Keep up the great work Marc.

Race Recap from Coach Brett Sutton:

Nicola_Carina_PodiumNicola (1st) and Carina (2nd) sharing the podium with Yannis at the 10km Ses Salines fun run.

The Champ (Nicola Spirig) and Boo Hoo (Carina Brechters) had a nice little ride on their way to a 10km Ses Salines fun run in Mallorca. A very well organised, community grass roots event. The Champ and Boo 1, 2 respectively before riding home again.

The Champ will endeavour to keep a competition schedule moving forward, as being physically fit and being race fit are not the same. Our biggest hurdle now is trying to get rearrange the competition to make sure we are not underdone in this area.

Boo on the other hand is now showing after 6 months that we are indeed moving the bike in the right direction. Not only with her position and technique, but now effort. So we will now go to work on reforming her run technique. Today was first race pace with new arm carriage. It was a good effort as working on new things when racing is very difficult.

Congratulations to all our athletes competing this weekend.
