While Saturday was a massive day for Daniela (Ryf) coming in Second at the 2014 World Championships, the trisutto.com squad also had a very important World Cup held in Cartegena, Columbia.
The women’s race commenced Celine (Schaerer) bouncing back to form as expected and leading a breakaway group out of the water and onto the bike. They produced a 40 second gap to the the main pack with Nicola Spirig right in the middle of it.
The best compliment I can give to Celine was from Nicola herself, who said early on there was panic in the chase group as the leaders had got away on a tight turning course. She went on to say it seemed like Celine was left to do it all on her own as the other girls had decided to play safe and let the second pack keep them in sight.
The gap off the bike was 45 seconds. Nicola later said:
‘I felt terrible and just couldn’t find my stride. So I ran with a group of 5 as we bridged the gap, not feeling any better till Paula (Findlay) put the hammer down and then my body reacted positively.’
Nicola went on to run a very quick last km to take her second World Cup victory in 8 days.
Celine again paid for all her hard work in the swim and bike and was run down to 28th. But her training buddy ensured me she had a back to form race as no one did more work in the swim or ride.
In the men’s race the Sutto squad was represented by Reinaldo Coluci and he produced a creditable 12th. This is not the full story as big Rei has been carrying and Achilles problem all year and like he did at the World Championships he pushed hard on the bike to create a breakaway only to have a lack of run miles curtail a podium finish. Reinaldo will now take time off to address his leg problem. All who have trained with him know how courageous he has been with his problem this year. We wish him a speedy recovery so the Lion can reset as he makes his charge to Rio 2016.
